When you look back on classic albums of the 1960s, this one ranks right up there - this is the debut effort from Chicago. Yes, they were known for a time as Chicago Transit Authority before then-mayor Richard Daley wasn't too pleased with the name; they since shortened it. Initially released as a double-album, rare and risky for a first album from an unknown group, this is one potent mix of rock and jazz that combine for an unidentifiable sound that totally was the band's very own - with just about every band member getting a chance to shine, save for woodwinder/saxophonist Walt Parazaider (who would get ultimate redemption for "Colour My World" on their next effort). Their musicianship was undeniable - so much so that you can forgive the late Terry Kath for channeling his inner Hendrix on "Free Form Guitar". On many US oldies radio stations, tracks like "Beginnings", "Does Anybody Really Know...?", and their cover of "I'm A Man" are still staples today that sound miles ahead of their time. Other songs like "Listen" and "Someday" sound like they could fit on playlists of CHR stations today. Have thirty-six years really passed since this first entered into the world's ears? Yes....and people still are blown away by this. Any wonder why they still tour every year (and again with Earth, Wind, & Fire in '05)? I guess the risk paid off.
