A rare occasion where two absolutely brilliant tunes are on the same plate. Impossible to say which one is more class, one or the other. Probably depends on the mood - if you're up for a more vibrant and jumpy though dark roller - go for Alien Girl. Wanna darker and heavier techstep vibe - play Cutslo.P.S. Totally loved when Andy C used to mix in Alien Girl as a teaser in his sets.

MONSTER TUNE!!! One of the the first records I bought back when I first bought my decks. Was always a favorite to mix into everything. Classic dnb right here! I sold the record 8 years ago thinking I'd never touch my vinyl again after moving to digital. Big mistake. I just ordered a used copy and paid double what I sold it for. We'll worth it though. This copy is staying with me for good now.

Cutslo was another game changer, from a time when the game was constantly changing! This track works in three parts to amazing effect - the steady, rolling build-up, teases you deliciously and gets your head nodding. Then, that killer pre-drop belches out those ugly bass stabs. Finally, we're left with nowhere to run, as the tune completely explodes. The hoover gets going, the amens show no mercy, and all that's left is total dance floor devastation.I first heard this in late 97 as part of Doc Scott's set at the Oxford Zodiac, broadcast live on 1 in the Jungle. When this tune got going, I couldn't believe my ears. Here now, nearly 20(!!) years later, it still sounds like the future. Alien Girl - Another one that I first heard well over a year before it's actual release, courtesy of the great Grooverider. What can be said about this then? A total monster of a tune, the bass firmly in the red throughout - total speaker annihilation! Nowhere near as epic as the A-side but a worthy companion. And I think that little noise before the drop is sampled from the Simpsons - it's the sound of Otto's school bus coming to a stop. ????All in all yet another legendary part of the stacked Prototype discography. Ed Rush, Optical and Fierces " Cutslo" is a good tune, however I've heard at least two versions of it so I presume there has been a remix but I don't know for sure. Both versions of Cutslo are both good, the darker version is better if you understand what I mean and the other which I heard on Rider's Prototype Years album was good but not as good as the other. Alien Girl is just a pure killer in every form, heavy tune.

But there's no need to slate one of the biggest dnb releases of all time just because it's not your cup of tea. Fair enough, no hating here at all mate - you make a somewhat valid point - I’m 39 years old so I’m getting on a bit………This is one of those tracks that helped to define a whole sub-genre within DNB, and if I may say so it a purists track in every single way. I heard Fierce play it mid-set recently to devastating effect nearly 15 years after its release date! Let me tell you -110% of people including fossils like me were brockin out big time! It’s all about standing the test of time, Alien Girl has stood that test - and stands still strong amongst a large majority of the over produced dross that’s churned out on an almost daily basis in the scene circa 2014. I don’t give a shit which elitist beard stroking producer of the moment says its average! They need the Phil Source headphone treatment on this one for real. Peace Shane BTW Body Rock not even in this league!

With all due respect, I doubt he's kidding. I know some dnb-veterans who don't like Alien Girl at all. I dig No U Turn, old Virus, 1210, The Nine, Up All Night, Underfire and literally all classic labels and tunes, but never really understood the concept of Alien Girl (along with Body Rock). I know, my attitude is disappointing, I'm a disgrace to the dnb scene and so on, but that's the truth. Maybe if I were a "born-in-the-early-80s" dude who got hooked into drum and bass because of Alien Girl I would appreciate it much more, but at this period of my life, it's just a simple (yet fine) choon.I did not mean to offend anyone, I put my hands down, I know this release is legendary for a reason. Just to say something good about it (and don't make myself look like a hater), the alien squelching and the general atmosphere of Alien Girl brings me back some good memories, it reminds me of some nice memoirs, and, if speeded up, I like it. Oh, and the other side is pretty good.

Classic double A side release. Probably my favorite DnB record (on the hard tip) of all time. Amazing stuff. I remember when it came out, the record shop only had one copy and after hearing it, I held on to it very tightly.

Ridiculous classic on BOTH SIDES of this plate. "Cutslo" Lokuste remix has an immensely satisfying, drawn out, deep, dark and downright scary build up, leading into an amen roll out that can and will send a rave nuts. "Alien Girl" on the other hand is the one ... just listen to this shit high as a mofo in a dark room and try not to be freaked out. It is clever, serious, immaculately produced, no-nonsense D&B that never fails to obliterate a dance floor. (It's a far cry from some of the "less serious" gimmicky drum & bass that emerged in later years.) Anybody who's anybody knows, respects and loves this terror-core anthem – it can be found amid the record collections of the scene's most respected D&B DJs. When Andy C brings this one in he rams it hard into the mix like a battering ram – cutting the other track back – making crowds go stupid. The scream sample in "Alien Girl" is Otto's bus door opening in The Simpsons from an episode of Tree House of Horrors, I shit you not.

An absolute classic! 'Alien girl' is a monster of a anthem with sounds to make you want to run & hide! The intro is spooky with a female whispering something, and then you get the instantly recognisable two step drum break followed by the deadly reece. This is a tune that get's played today & will be played forever. The flip 'Cutslo' is equally as good and has a even more deadly sounding reece bassline than 'Alien girl'. This is the Virus crew at their very best & one of the all time best drum & bass tunes.

One of those tunes that is so dark it evokes negative emotions in people. Slightly contrary to the info above, it's not Cutslo (locust mix) but rather Cutslo (Locust Remix) i.e. the track is a re-work of an earlier track called Locust by the same guys.

A classic dancefloor moment from the No U-Turn refugee's Fierce and Ed Rush, and the latter’s more recent production partner and ex- Spiral Tribe affiliate Optical. Compared to most of the 'Darkside' tracks round at that time 'Cutslo' positively thunders along with a quick, cutting two step break, and a tremendously warm, flowing bassline. Apparently the bass sounds on this, and a great many other of Ed Rush's tracks, were achieved by running the synths through old guitar distortion pedals to fatten the signal. Whatever the method, the outcome is clear. This track is a classic, not just of the scene, but of the entire drum & bass genre. Rather than opting for the then 'des rigeur' bleak, hollow, industrial edged noise, reese bass and needle sharp snares, (which they and the rest of No U-Turn’s crew jointly pioneered) the trio have created a sound, still bone rattlingly hard, but as warm as uplifting as any supposedly "Euphoric" dance. Still being played in big clubs as late as 2002, this tracks stands up tremendously well when compared to any current material by leading producers in the Drum & Bass scene. The drop is a fine example of why the phrase "rewind" was initially coined.
