Before they became Phoenecia - an electronic duo that aspired to be America's answer to Autechre, basically, with a sound as difficult as knitting water and which, appropriately enough, often resembled knitting needles clacking underwater - Miami's Josh Kay and Romulo Del Castillo got their start as Soul Oddity. Play album. Get album. Before mutating into Phoenecia and pursuing its own particular abstract mode, the Soul Oddity duo came up with an enjoyably off-kilter and often UFO-themed album that quite obviously demonstrated a love for Detroit techno, further filtered, if less obviously here than later, via such labels as Warp and R&S. Unlike so many IDM bores who took some of those ideas. Soul Oddity Tone Capsule. Etichetta: Astralwerks ASW 6173-2. Formato: CD, Album. Paese: US. Soul Oddity is, well, odd. It's electro with the typical electro beat and a sound that seems to be generated under water out of this world experience guaranteed. It's not dance music it's quite demanding, actually. Tone Capsule, 2007. Welcome Back to Earth, 06:51. Freq Shift, 06:02. Now playing: U2 I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. Released: Jan Oddity's Tone Capsule is undoubtably one of my favorite records. They represent to me how explosively full of possibilities music is. When I produce my own music the most important thing for me is to get across the spirit of fun and wonder that Soul Oddity communicates so well. Read more. This is Phoenecia before they were Phoenecia. You can tell it's the same mind programming, but this album is more electro, while Phoenecia has an ambiance similar to Platikman's Consumed. Both Phoenecia nd Soul Oddity are essential albums for true electronic IDM heads. Tone Capsule, by Soul Oddity Phoenecia. 10 track album. English US. also, can someone please tell me what the old school rap is that's looped in Freq Shift? i can't for the life of me figure it out.
SkroN
alright, checked out the different versions of the Breakin' soundtrack, no luck, not on the Beat Street soundtracks either... argh...
Tcaruieb
hmm, maybe i'll go dig up the soundtrack, hopefully it's on there and not directly sampled from the movie... if anything, always a treat to hear Ice-T before he went gangsta rap. XD
Varshav
It might be on the soundtrack to Breakin' the 80s movie.
Marinara
this is an idm gem from back in the day. it coasts along effortlessly on electro and acid house vibes with healthy doses of miami bass. definitely a must have. i also recommend this album to those who don't like their idm too abrasive or glitchy or abstract (not that there's anything wrong with those styles either ;) ).
