Alligator is the third album by Brooklyn-based indie rock band The National, released in April 2005. The album brought The National critical acclaim and led them to headline a tour, with opening act Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The album was on many year-end top 10 lists, including Uncut and Planet Sound, both of which ranked it as the number two album of 2005. Pitchfork Media and NME ranked Alligator as a top album of the 2000s. The National may sound like a garage band turned down, but there's as much primal energy lurking behind Alligator as in any mop-topped group of city kids with bloodstained Danelectros in a dusty warehouse. Pitchfork Media ranked Alligator at number 40 in their top albums of the 2000s list. Alligator has sold over 200,000 copies worldwide. The band performed album track The Geese of Beverly. Genre: Indie Rock. There is nothing pretentious about the way Alligator reveals itself, nothing overbearing or confusing it just slides by, always laughably good. Full Review. Best of 2005. Worst of 2005. The National Alligator Live Album Compiled from a variety of live sources, cross-faded to give the impression of a continuous performance. Special this exquisite album by The National sounds like it was tailor-made to fill that bill. In fact, these songs aren't just memorizable-they're unforgettable. First, a little note. After finding The National like many others with High Violet, I've bought everything since. If you're reading this I guess you may be filling in the back catalogue too. Listened to Alligator and Boxer lots on streaming and bought this on CD as I still prefer to own physical copies of stuff I like and pay my dues for music I listen to a lot. Diddly guitars, check. The National - Alligator review: The very definition of understated, The National's 2005 masterpiece is melancholic indie-rock at its absolute finest, and remains touching and powerful years on. It sounds extremely strange, but it's sometimes easy to forget that Alligator is a perfect album. Understated even at its loudest points, there's something about The National's second studio album that lends itself to immersion. Matt Berninger's baritone, world-weary tone lulls you into a safe place full of slow-burning hooks, black-and-white pianos and unassuming rhythms, and it's a world that, for all its unique facets, feels familiar and warm. The mastering sounds good but my two copies are very ticky. It's a little bit disturbing. Not a nice pressing for me.

I used to play this record with a AT90E cartridge and it always bugged me the amount of ticks this album had for apparently no reason (my copy isn't scratched or scuffed) Then I went back to the original cartridge of my TT, a technics E270C with a Jico elliptical replacement stylus and it was quite an improvement. No more annoying ticking on the quiet passages of Val Jester or Geese. There are still ticks but not so frequent and loud as with the AT90E. Maybe the cart/stylus has to do with this? Since there is a lot of music pressed in each side, that may cause trouble to some styli.

Without prompting, I thought my copy was yellow. But I can see a greenish tint to it.At the same time, my copy does not have the JONZ LOUD etched in the runout on either side. I bought it at their concert in Berkeley this past summer.

My copy is yellow to my eyes though I know some people call a similar shade of neon both yellow or green depending on the person. I can vaguely make out the word "LOUD" on one side with a "J" above it but it's incredibly hard to see, and I have good vision. After several attempts, I finally found "JONZ LOUD" on side A but boy was that a challenge. I might need to buy an eye loupe to magnify this stuff. You may want to re-examine yours.

ITS GREEN! (ish) - & it sounds FANTASTIC! - realy nice pressing
Zamo
I have this green/lime copy.. Sounds great! a little hiss in between songs, but I think all color pressing make this hissing sound...
Bradeya
I have to disagree, I have records in all different colors that are beautifully silent. Quality of the pressing makes a much bigger difference.
Anayanis
All vinyl is coloured alart from clear!! Even black is coloured...
SadLendy
Not really. All vinyl is coloured apart from clear...standard black is essentially coloured.
Gom
I think it's more yellow than green.
sergant
Mine is yellow. And yes, I've been tested for color blindness.
Simple fellow
Hi does anybody know how this compares to the regular black pressing in terms of sound quality and durability? Thanks!

Mastered by John Dent at LOUD in the UK. I enjoy my copy!

Better sound quality and a heavier pressing
