The title of Pop Romantique: French Pop Classics is a little misleading - most of the songs here do date from the golden age of French pop and are associated with major figures like Serge Gainsbourg and Francoise Hardy, but contributing artists were simply required to deliver a song sung in French. So the Apples in Stereo deliver a French-styled original in Avril en Mai, as does the team of Kevin Ayers and the Ladybug Transistor, while Lloyd Cole sings a Bob Dylan song &Si Tu Dois Partir. An updated, modern version tribute, even to the standards of French romantic pop. It was a great treat for me, at least.
